Power BI: Enterprise Analytics Platform

Semantic models that drive the enterprise. DAX queries optimized for performance. Governance that works at scale.

What we deliver with Power BI

01

Star-schema semantic models

Conformed dimensions and clean fact tables, so measures behave predictably instead of depending on which report someone opened.

02

DAX performance discipline

Measures written to the storage engine’s strengths, variables instead of repeated expressions, and query plans reviewed when reports slow down.

03

Refresh and gateway architecture

Incremental refresh, partitioned history, and gateway capacity sized to real refresh windows rather than to optimistic assumptions.

04

Row-level security

Roles driven by an entitlement table, so access follows HR data instead of being hand-maintained in each report.

05

Deployment pipelines and adoption

Dev, test, and production workspaces with rule-based deployment, plus certified datasets so people build on trusted models.

How we work with Power BI

Power BI problems are usually modelling problems wearing a reporting disguise. We rebuild the semantic model as a proper star schema first, move business logic into measures, and only then touch report layout. Most performance complaints disappear at that step.

Governance is deliberately light: a small number of certified datasets, clear ownership per workspace, and deployment promoted through environments by rule. Teams keep freedom to build; they simply build on something trustworthy.

Power BI in production: where it breaks

The same handful of problems show up on almost every engagement. Naming them early is cheaper than discovering them at 2am.

One giant flat model

A single wide table with everything joined makes every measure ambiguous and slow. Normalising into facts and dimensions fixes both.

Bidirectional relationships by default

They create ambiguous filter paths and wrong totals. We keep single-direction filters and use measures where cross-filtering is genuinely needed.

A report per team

Duplicated reports drift apart and refresh twice. Shared certified datasets with team-specific reports on top keep one version of the truth.

When to use Power BI

Microsoft-aligned organisations consolidating reporting on one platform.

Finance teams that need governed, auditable monthly reporting.

Mid-market businesses replacing spreadsheet reporting without a data team.
